Community of Spanaway
Spanaway is an unincorporated area near Tacoma and Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Historically, part of the Hudson's Bay Company, the Puget Sound Agricultural Company used the area to raise cattle and sheep as well as grow grain. Spanaway was originally considered the "gateway" to Mount Rainier because it was the start of a 2-day stagecoach trip bringing tourists to the mountain.
One of the biggest attractions in Spanaway is Spanaway Lake. This popular lake is surrounded by a 135-acre park with picnic areas, a playground, boat launch, trails, swimming beaches and much more.
